Spent the weekend in Belfast and met up with pals - found our way to the John Hewitt which was great - friendly staff and locals, open fire and welcoming atmosphere. Added to this, we enjoyed the blue grass music, expertly performed that night and made our visit all the more worthwhile. We will be back when we return to... More

We enjoyed a Guinness or two and some real Irish music. There were a few tourists in the crowd but it was mainly locals. The atmosphere was great and the music was fabulous. Even better the Workers Resource Centre owns the bar and pumps the profits back into servicesnfor the community. It's a must do while in Belfast More

Having lived in Belfast for over 14 years there aren't many bars I dont know in the city. The Hewitt is city centre based in the re-defined Cathedral Quarte area. It hosts plenty of music, literary and visual delights throught the year so be sure to check and see if there's anything worth seeing when you're in town. As good... More

I absolutely love this place. The lively, cheerful chatter bounces off the walls; have no doubt the 'craic' is excellent. The pictures hint at a literary past and you can well imagine writers inspiring themselves by the open fire. This smashing pub is equally a great setting for friends to meet up or if you just want to enjoy a... More

We spent a couple of days in Belfast this past summer..and were lucky enough to happen on the John Hewitt. We arrived a little too late for the live music, but were kept entertained by the friendly staff and some very welcoming locals. The staff talked and joked around with us..it didn't feel stuffy like some other places we checked... More

Had a quick lunch in here last week before catching the train to Larne for my ferry but have to say the food was far and away the best I had during my week's stay in Northern Ireland. Having toured round Strangford Lough and expecting better grub, it came as a bit of a surprise to find the best meal... More

We have visited many pubs all over Ireland and would rate John Hewitt as one of the best. We arrived while food was still served. my helping of soup was full size and very tasty, about 3 pounds. The music played continually from late Saturday afternoon. till about 9 P.M. It was the real traditional Irish music played by up... More

What can I say about the John Hewitt? Sounds ominous, doesn't it? My partner and I went for lunch in November, on a cold wet miserable Saturday afternoon. We had not been in the John Hewitt for many years and kind of impulsively thought about it for lunch one afternoon. We wanted to see what all the new hype was... More
