In the area you can happily visit working distilleries but Dallas Dhu fell silent in 1983 and hasn't returned since. However thanks to the efforts of Historic Scotland you can visit one of the last distilleries to be built and the only one preserved in its Victorian form.

Decided to visit the only "standing still in time" evidence of a victorian distillery on our way to Ben Romach. Half wished we had not bothered. If you don't know anything about whisky and don't mind paying over the odds for a self guided tour (you get a hand held commantory wand to play & listen too at set points)...

As a bit of a whisky nut, visiting this now defunct distillery was great. It gave you a chance to poke and prod 'til your hearts content - seeing parts of a distillery not normally open to us mere mortals !!
