Dunstaffnage became the temporary prison of Flora MacDonald in 1746.The location – stand on the battlements, overlooking the Firth of Lorn, and see just why the MacDougall chief built his castle where he did. The formidable curtain wall – amongst the oldest standing castle remains in Scotland. The ‘new house’ of 1725 in the courtyard – perhaps where Flora MacDonald was held prisoner. Dunstaffnage Chapel – tucked away amongst the trees, an extraordinary legacy from the 13th century. « less

We visited this during the May heatwave and the setting is truly magical. Just enough history without becoming boring, and on a beautiful promontory beside the shore with views to mountains and islands. Do not drive past! More

It looks fantastic and it is a nice walk around. However at the time we visited work was being carried out and there wasn't anybody on hand in the grounds to go through the history. The visitors centre (were you pay) had two staffs and they were more than happy to give any help. More

Don't miss this Castle and Chapel if time permits. The day was bleak and damp but we still enjoyed the walk around (uneven ground so be careful). Workmen are continuing stabilising work and making a new visitors centre inside the Castle at present but visitors can still walk about. The story of the Castle and its life is well illustrated... Jim, the very helpful guide in the shop is very useful in getting the history of the place. its £4 each (adults) to look round, and I think its worth it. We walked back along the coastal path- it was january, so very muddy & boggy. On the walk back BE WARNED! there is a very scary jump over a... More
