I had some time to kill in Edinburgh whilst waiting for a friend but this isn't the pub to choose for that sort of purpose. They rely on ambient lighting rather than local lighting so it's not suitable to sit and read in although it's very traditional decor to look at to pass the time. The barman was very friendly... This is not a pub to spent the afternoon in while enjoying a lazy lunch , it is not a place to pop into and use their facilities and expect a welcoming mat and it is not a modern light and bright spot where you hope to be 'seen in' by the trendier visitors to Edinburgh. However if you want... More

We went to this pub after going to the castle and regretted every minute. The woman behind the bar was rude, the selection of drinks was poor, the beer tasted like it had line cleaner in it and the gin was more like water and flat mixers..... I can only think its still going due to passing trade that doesn't... More

Visited during the Fringe Festival. Good beer, friendly atmosphere but dosn't welcome the use of its WC's by non-paying customers! Toilet code is 1550. More

All the previous bad reviews of this place don't come anywhere near to conveying how really bad it is. There is a woman in this place who on this day happened to be wearing a grey trouser suit she is the most arrogant, rude and confrontational woman I have ever had the displeasure to have met. If she runs this... More

After reading through places to visit on our next Edinburgh visit I stubbled across Ensign Ewart and remembered our visit, brief visit at that on our previous visit. Whilst the decor is ok in terms of traditional, the atmosphere was horrible. I ordered a pint of Black Sheep or Landlord and it was off (nothing new there), I returned the... More

We visited the Ensign Ewart as it was in a convenient position to get lunch after leaving the castle. After sitting down in the virtually empty bar we were immediately informed by the barmaid that we had to order from the bar. I ordered scots pie, imagining a simple but tasty home made meal. What I actually got was a... More

This is our favourite pub in Edinburgh! It is cosy and quite, a great place to escape from the noise of the rest of the Royal Mile! It has a great selection of drinks and friendly staff. Also, you simply cannot beat it for atmosphere! It's a great place to go on your own with a book, ot to go... More

OMG........What an awful mistake we made!!!! Should of guessed really as the place was half empty - Landlady made us feel very un-welcome and refused to serve us as were a party of 10. We had a great day looking at the various sites and were on our way back to our accomodation when we decided to call in for... More

As a mature sensible woman in my early 60's I entered the pub after visiting the castle with a group of friends. Before we even had a chance to order drinks from the barmaid the old witch with the grey hair came out and told us to leave, she would not serve us because we were too many. In all... More
