This is the third time I've been to the Gallery. Its a popular place with lectures and a cafe downstairs looking out onto the park. Its like a microcosm of D'Orsay, Louvre and more all rolled into an easy to digest Gallery. (I find the Louvre too much, and won't go.) A few of each of the masters (Degas, Rembrandt,... more

The gallery is okay, not too big and has quite a lot of older paintings but still a nice visit, especially because the entry is free :-) The downstairs cafe has a nice view to the Princes Street Garden. more

One of the best galleries we have been to. Very impressive collection of paintings. Right in the center. Top of the top, that you can see in two hours, in our opinion much better than largest galleries like National Gallery in London or Louvre in Paris, where you need to spend whole day and you don't remember anything at the... more

The National Gallery of Scotland deserves some time from every visitor to Edinburgh as it is a world-class art institution. Works by Fragonard, Titian, Raphael, Velazquez, Van Dyck, Boucher, Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Poussin, Gainsborough, Turner make a great visit, alongside Flemish and early Renaissance pictures. If you're a bit tired with blockbusters names and are after something different,... more

I didn't check ahead (I was going to Edinburgh anyway) so I was rather disappointed to find out that the Vermeer they have was not on display. Only maybe 40 of his paintings in the world and they don't put it out, but they have rubbish like Gaugin on their walls. I only found out the information when searching their... more

Having been a big fan of the National Gallery restaurant and having used it for personal and business meals, I was shocked by the drop in quality at my last visit in March 2009. I struggled through my starter of butternut squash risotto - the rice was more al concrete than al dente and the cubes of butternut squash were... more

This is a lovely little gallery with helpful staff. The fact that it doesn't house a huge collection is used to its advantage, as it means the gems are even more prominent and you can see them all in as little as an hour or so. It's nice to see some less typical pieces representing some of the masters (the... more

The National Gallery is a small art museum with impressive works on display. Iconic "Rev'd Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch" alongside Monet, Degas, Seurat, Van Gogh, Gaugin - WOW! more

I was stunned as soon as we walked through the door. This is a beautiful building with an amazing art collection. This is a must see for art enthusiasts of the medieval through Renaissance through Impressionist eras. I wish we had been able to spend more time there. The collection was larger than I anticipated. Free admission too! This gallery... more

The National Gallery of Scotland is a wonderful museum that receives far less international attention than it deserves. They've got a marvelous collection of Scottish and European works. Everything is well labeled and the museum is just the right size to make for a satisfying walk-through. Best of all the restaurant is terrific . more
