Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

This was recommended to us by a guide. The welcome we got in the shop was fantastic. Fiona offered us some traditional fudge and asked us about our day. I could have spent all day chatting to her.

The shop had a range of souvenirs at great prices and was full of quality high end items, which is hard to find in some of the souvenir shops.

I was thrilled to find dark chocolate Tunnock tea cakes! Made my holiday.

Thank you for adding to our trip.

I love this shop! What a find for all things Scottish when it comes to food and small gifts and the owner and her staff are so friendly and helpful. Bought with the most delicious shortbread cookies presented in a beautiful purple gift tin with a thistle motif on it as well as a tin of Orkney Oatcakes and Scottish chocolate bars made with Scottish whiskey! Great selection all around. While my friend and I shopped the entire store, our husbands were tasting whiskey!

I have this shop double starred as a must visit when I return to Edinburgh! I highly recommend Cranachan & Crowdie.

Thank you for this great review...you've inspired me to want to shop at my own shop! We have found over the years that helping wives shop by offering tastes of whisky and gin to their husbands to keep them occupies is appreciated. Thank you for recommending C&C! Look forward to welcoming you back in the near future, Beth

Thank you for your shiny 5 stars Monika and sharing the love about our unique offering of hand made, often exclusive items. When you're ready for more cheese and gin please pop back in as we are expecting to have a few new Scottish gins on the shelves in 2020. Best regards, Beth

Visited here looking for a Christmas present for family - the shop has an extensive collection of gin. One of the ladies who work there (American) was so helpful and gave us descriptions of a selection of gins and allowed us to taste the ones we couldn’t choose between. Incredibly informative and very friendly. Helped us choose the best Christmas present and then gift wrapped it beautifully for free. Couldn’t recommend enough!

I was lucky enough to visit beautiful Edinburgh this week, my first trip to Scotland, where I am fortunate enough to have a great friend in Dunbar put me up. I had a day in Edinburgh to check the sites, and was so pleased to find Cranachan & Crowdie (which my friend told me is a Scottish dessert and a Scottish cheese), where I picked up gifts for my wife and daughter and sisters. Highly recommended, as an antidote to the endless similar stores on the Royal Mile. Lovely staff as well.
