As many have said Brough of Birsay is a tidal island only accessible during low tide. The island itself is home to the remains of a Viking settlement (complete with Viking drainage system!). This is not a huge site in itself but the location adds an extra level of excitement. I thoroughly enjoyed this and it is most certainly worth the effort to visit. Dress for wind. More

On Orkney, as in most places surrounded by water, it is easy to find out the tide information. if you do cross to visit the viking site, there... More

We woke this morning to a mild frost but not a cloud in the sky and not a breath of wind. The perfect morning for a return to The Brough of Birsay we decided So I quickly checked the tidal times on the link to the Brough as the Brough is a tidal island which can only be accessed via... More
