Discovered by chance by local farmer Ronnie Simison in the 1950s, the Stone Age tomb revealed an amazing collection of bones and artefacts, placed here some 5,000 years ago. Roughly half a mile inland from the tomb is a Bronze Age site. It comprises a mound of burnt stone and the remains of a stone building, named after the ‘Liddle’ farm where Ronnie uncovered them. Excavations at the site have led to important discoveries about how people lived and worked in Orkney 3,000 years ago.Enjoy a unique ‘hands-on’ experience at the Visitor Centre, where you can see, and enjoy the privilege of handling some of the original artefacts found at the sites. During the main visitor season, fascinating displays and daily talks offer insights into the lives of these Stone Age and Bronze Age people. Explore some of the questions which remain unanswered. The Gift Shop offers a wide range of items, including many local crafts, books, hot and cold drinks and Orkney ice cream. There is a stunning walk from the Visitor Centre to the tomb, via the Bronze Age site - approximately 1 mile along a well-marked path. The maritime heath and grassland is alive in the summer with birds and wild flowers. More than 50 years after Ronnie Simison came across these remarkable sites, his family invite you to come and enjoy these well-loved visitor attractions. « less

I've been to Orkney several times before but have never visited The Tomb of the Eagles until now. The site is a bit out of the way but well worth the drive to visit.. This is a family run site with an interesting visitor centre giving history of the discovery of the tomb and the nearby Burnt Mound. As others... More

Privately run but excellent site, history of the discovery and excavation of the site as interesting as the site itself, important insight to the treatment of the dead during the Neolithic, if your in to that sort of thing. be prepared for a lengthy but pleasent walk from the visitors centre to the site. Was there in the early spring and loved it. The little museum and gift shop was also a nice touch. Not the big splashy displays one gets at a urban center but much more personal. You are able to come much closer to the original objects than one would normally get. Staff were also very nice and helpful. It was... More

Step back 5,000 years in time with a visit to the Tomb of the Eagles site and visitor centre. I was there on a wild November day, and you could feel history breathing down your neck. Very interactive, you get to touch the real tools etc. that people used in the stone age, and there are no fancy digital displays... More

To us this attraction offered a non commercial view of Orkney's vast heritage. The initial talk allowed us to actually touch artefacts discovered on initial excavations. Whilst it's true, the walk to the actual mound and tomb is a trek. The families dedication and passion for this site is reflected. More

A magical trip into the depths of history, and a fascinating insight into how people lived so very long ago. Just a scrape beneath the surface is a wealth of archaeological wonder. THe fact that this is a 'private' facility, rather than one managed by Historic Scotland does give it a charm, and also provide a more 'hands on' approach... More

Visited Orkney in August on a bus tour, so grateful we did, Tomb of the Eagles was our first stop, so interesting, so amazing to realize some of our Ancestors originated from those parts in the Neolithic time zone. It is really mind boggling when you come to realize the age and history of the place. Would recommend Orkney to... More

We did get some decent information about the site, but were told there would be two talks, one of five minutes and one of 15 minutes, before we could go out to see the two ancient sites on the property. An hour and a half later we were finally "released" to visit the two sites. To see them would have... More

I have been here twice, once with my friends and once with my dad. The first time, we were blown away, but on the return visit it wasn't as amazing as I first thought it was. It is still pretty neat, though, and the cliff walk is quite nice. The staff are amazing - VERY knowledgeable, friendly, and thorough. It... More

Enjoyed this little tour and walk along the coast. Firstly the little visitor centre is enlivened by the people who tell you about the finds and they are very enthusiastic and importantly interesting. It may not be a fully fledged visitor attraction or turned into full Disney as some expect but for those that read and listened to the background... More
