The origina Abbey Theatre was damaged in a fire many years ago and the building that replaced it is more akind to what you might find in Soviet Russia. However a good play is always good and check out the Peacock Theatre too. More

The home of the National Theatre, the Abbey has been renowned since the foundation of the state for the quality of plays and its actors. Many of the players have become internationally famous in their own right. More

On my annual trips to Ireland I always make a point of visiting the Abbey Theatre. The building is conveniently located on Middle Abbey Street off of O'Connell Street. The Theatre is a cultural and historical landmark that predates the Irish Independence. Back in those days the nationalist message was put forth through many plays of the Irish revival and... More

We saw The Government Inspector and loved the play. The venue is medium in size and perfect for an intimate night out. Highly recommended. More

Was there last year for a production of "The Plough and the Stars" by Sean O'Casey. It's the same place that premiered those great plays of J M Synge, O"Casey and O'Neil etc in the 1920s. A unique experience from all points of view. I treated myself to a good seat but it wasn't expensive at all - 38 Euro.... More

It's unfortunate that Ireland's national theatre is in such a nondescript, blah building. Oh well, it doesn't detract from the quality of the theatre. It's a nice place to see plays and the downstairs theatre - the peacock - often shows less traditional pieces. I like the Abbey quite a bit and would recommend seeing plays here. Like many theatres... More

Brought up in the UK on a schoolboy English literature course that properly included Wilde and Synge I had naively expected an older theatre. This late post war building came as a slight disappointment but the production in September of the Plough and the Stars did not. Will try to coordinate future visits to the city with other good productions. More
