An easy side trip off the highway between Belfast and Dublin (close to Dublin) and is well worth a visit. Ancient stone crosses, 1000yrs old, still with such incredible detail and so high! Lots of history with the round towewr and other ruins here also. It is possible to have a tour run by volunteers but we were not there... More

Monasterboice boasts the best two High Crosses in Ireland along with one of the tallest remains of the Irish round towers which typically were built next to their ancient monastic sites. There are also the remains of two churches. The site is still used today as a burial ground so there is a link between the ancient and the modern.... More

If you have time, this is a great stop to stretch the legs while learning about Ireland. Also, it is free! The cross itself is amazing and to think this is how they spread religion back then. You will also pass many other amazing crosses. More

We visited Monasterboice last week and while the site is beautiful, our experience has been overshadowed by the thieves that broke into our rental car. Read what other travelers have written on this forum (I wish we had) -- break-ins happen almost every day, even if you park right in front of a gate. Even a priest while performing a... More

Monasterboice is beautiful, easy to get to and free. Cars are broken into every day. The parking lot is full of broken glass and warning signs. Take all your valuables out of the car and carry them with you. If you can leave someone with your car at all times. We found out the hard way. More

Love Irish cemeteries to begin with but this is by far the best in the country. Between the usual mix of very old and new graves that is typical for Irish cemeteries, which this one has also, this had the added attractions of a round tower, decent church ruins, and 2 of the best high Crosses in the country. I've... More

Monasterboice is just off the A-1, just north of Drogheda, and features the largest High Cross in Ireland, along with one of the highest and one of the oldest. The Cross of Muiredach features wonderful carvings on virtually all its surfaces and is the the most massive on the island. Closer to the round tower (a good example other than... More

Monasterboice is a great place to view High Crosses in Ireland. We loved our visit, even though it was a very rainy day. The crosses are amazing. More

Monasterboice doesn't take very long to check out, but it's worth the stop. The round tower, ruins, and Celtic crosses make for some great pictures. More

Monasterboice is a well kept cemetery with excellent examples of High crosses and a tower albeit without the conical top. I visited early morning in December of 2005, the guide was kind enough to bring coffee. The tour was informative, its in a beautiful setting and you get the chance to understand why they made the crosses the way they... More
