Picked up a leaflet about this attraction in the Hotel Lobby, was on a city deal break in Newtownmountkennedy, Wicklow is only a 5 minute drive away, glad I did this tour, it's very well presented, to say too much would not be fair, like when someone tells you the end of a movie, allow an hour and a half... I have visited quite a few historical attractions over the last year, to date Wicklow's Historical Gaol. From the moment you enter the "Gates of Hell" (called that because few who entered did not exit)! To the moment you leave (released-more about that later) the visit offers the full experience. On entry you are greeted by a staff member in... More

We spent almost 3 hours including a snack at the excellent and well priced cafe. Great information about the personallities involved and the treatment of offenders young and old. Quite a lot of detail on the 1798 rebellion and very informative regarding the plight and ensuing life of those transported to the colonies for such crimes as stealing bread during... More

Wicklow Gaol is an intersting tour and it certainly has a lot of histroy assoicated with it. The tour has some interesting information about life in the gaol during the famine times, but for me the tour over plays the "haunted gaol" thing. It'd be one thing if they just told some gold old Irish ghost stories, but instead they... More

If you have any interest in history at all, never mind irish history, this is an attraction you can simply not afford to bypass. From the minute you enter the waiting room and are met by the jailer the adventure begins. For the period of the famine, forget the book's and go enjoy the experience More

Gaol was turned into a Christmas delight. My husband and I were treated like one of Santa's children which was delightful. Write a letter to Santa, see the Victorian street, listen to a Christmas story and see Santa himself. Thank you for putting me into the Christmas spirit! Plus the jail is informative, too. We were given a book on... More

We visited the Gaol during a weekend break in County Wicklow and found it to be very interesting. We were shown around by the Gaoler and he played the part in a scarily realistic way - excellent (and quite terrifying!). There is loads of information in the cells and the atmosphere made it easier to imagine the sheer terror that... More

Myself and some friends have a little "Breakfast Club".. we have a cooked breakfast in Wicklow Town once a week. In the course of the past several months we have tried all of the Cafes in Wicklow Townb and the surroundings.. The Cafe at Wicklow Gaol is by far the best. Not only is it the best cooked breakfast in... More
