This is the Northern Quarter which was recommended as upcoming and trendy. We walked up Oldham Street to go to a recommended restaurant which was actually full so walked back down. There are some interesting little shopping arcades (Afflecks) and record shops but at night it's not ideal and I was glad I wasn't alone! More

Intimidating and awash with litter, a mecca for students and smackheads. Its once cool credentials ended with the heyday of the Dry Bar. Promised makeover and Waitrose replacing the Nobles slot machine arcade may improve things More

I visit Oldham Street often and over the years it has changed from being an afterthought to the rest of the city centre to being one of the coolest and most interesting streets round in what is now called the Northern Quarter. It has the wonderful Affleck's Palace of course but also lots of other vintage and quirky shops like... More
