The Chateau of Haut Koeningsbourg is a great counterpoint to visiting Strasbourg and the wine villages of Alsace. The large Chateau was restored under the German Empire in the early 19th Century as a museum and was one of the first scientifically researched restorations of the century. The castle itself is stunning. You can see it from the valley on... More

The setting is spectacular however everything about the site is wrong - an ego-maniacal extravaganca built by the Prussian Emperor Wilhelm II (the same one who brought you WW1) - overdone and not French in character at all. More

If you leave Colmar to the north or Strasbour to the south somewhee in the middle you'll see an impressive fortress on overlooking the Rhine from the Vosges mountains, the Chateau Haut Koenigsbourg. You can drive up there from Selestat, which is the closest small town. In Summer on weekends there is also a shuttle bus service from the station... More

Kaiser Wilhelm II von Hohenzollern of the Prussian Empire decided to renovate this ancient and then ruined castle & at the turn of the 20th Century, began complete no expenses spared renovations, in genuine 16th Century style. I won't go on about history and opening hours etc as you can check it out on the website - http://www.haut-koenigsbourg.fr/en/castle When I... More

Up on the mountain, nice winding road to reach it, nice view (with clear weatherm but not too bad even with a bit of cloud), impressive interiors. Worth to listen to the guide (we got it in French), telling about the long history and aneddots of the castle and its reconstruction. Could be even better in summer, there must be... More

The drive up to the castle is beautiful; the castle itself is amazing. It boggles the mind to consider the labor involved in constructing the castle--and reconstructing and reconstructing. The history is rich, well worth researching beyond your site visit. We found it an enriching diversion (and good exercise) from our Wine Trail pursuits! BTW, we visited off-season (March), so... Castle Haut Koenigsbourg was probably built around 1100 by Frederic I Hohenstaufen. Ruined by siege in 1462 it is rebuilt and modernized by the Tierstein family from 1479 onwards. They order the construction of the little and the greater bastion and surround the fortress with a wall in order to hinder the deployment of enemy artillery. In july 1633 the... More

The views of the Alsace wine region from this chateau atop a hill is simply gorgeous. The winding drive up adds to the adventure and anticipation. Try to come early to avoid the crowds. More

Really nice castle, but November is probably not the best time to visit it. Huge part of it was under construction, so I think I saw just 1/3 of everything there is to see. I recommend visits in summer or spring, but not winter or autumn. Anyway, it was very pleasant, I liked it. More
