This cave has original paintings as well as engravings incised into the softer areas. You take an open battery powered train on a track and stop to see the works of art as well as the beds of the cave bears that preceded man's time in the cave. The train takes you through several kilometers of cave before you reach... More

In the middle of the most peaceful countryside that you could ever imagine. The cave was inhabited by bears many millions of years ago, and you can still see the places where they hibernated. Man came later, about 15,000 years ago, and started his paintings. How anyone could ever make such beautiful paintings while working in almost total darkness, so... More

Fantastic cave. NOT a cave for stalactites and stalagmites, this is a cave with cave paintings. Numbers are limited each day, but we had no problem getting tickets on a Sunday in August. Be warned however this being rural France, they close for 2 hours for lunch. Train ride into the cave, with guide. As others have commented be warned,... More

After visiting the Font de Gaume, we were taken by our fantastic guide, Phillipe, to Rouffignac Cave. The highlight was the "chapel" of cave drawings at the end. We had a guide who spoke in both French and English...there was only one French family on the train on this trip. The rest were English speaking or knew English better than... More

Visiting this cave is quite an adventure. As other reviewers note, you take a long train ride down and down, then see some amazing art. Actually the ride is a bit boring, kind of like going down a mine shaft and the train, which seemed to conk out a couple times, did not inspire confidence. But the artwork makes it... More

The cave drawings are real, not replicas and a tram takes you 1 km into one finger of a multifingered cave where fabulous drawings were made. We also passed round depressions in the floor of the cave where huge cave bears hibernated for tens of thousands of years. They were truly gigantic and went extinct before men made their drawings.... Awesome cave. We also went to Lascaux II and were not too impressed. We missed the English guide and had to listen to the French guide. Rouffignac was MUCH better. The tour was also in French but the guide was awesome and explained the more interesting details to us in English (he was very nice). There are a few other... More

The Rouffignac Caves are certainly very impressive. We were recommended to go here because it is an authentic cave, and Lascaux II is only a replica and the original Lascaux is off limits. It's also more fun for kids, because it has a little train that carries you through the cave. The only, but major, downpart is that there is... More

These caves are amazing and totally better than Lascaux II. We went to both. First Lascaux. It was a bit of a rip off. We missed the english tour and the french guide only spoke about why the second caves were made and how (nothing surprising there). The only up side was that you could take photos. Rouffigac on the... More

A lot less famous than Lascaux, we found this cave actually a hundred times more interesting and exciting to visit. You drive in a small train into what turns out to be a very dark, long passage way, at times very narrow, with hundreds of cave paintings. The guide - who spoke perfect English - had a lot of knowledge... More
