Excellent! We were taking a castle tour of the Loire Valley and took the extra drive to visit the building site at Guedelon ... worth ever minute we drove out of the way. At this point, the castle is built up enough that there are rooms to tour, you can see the footprint of all the future building spots, and... More

There are always lots of places with castles. We see how people lived in them, served them, destroyed them and relied on them. But if you have ever wondered what it was like to build one, then Guedelon is the place to go. I found the whole experience astonishing. Every stone, every step, every twist through the woods. There are... More

As I watched this Medieval Castle being built I thought of how this was someone'e idea and dream coming true. It is amazing that someone followed through so that we might take part in history in the making. I felt like I was stepping back in time watching the stonecutters, mason layers, quarryman, carpenters, and blacksmith work at their various... More

Imagine going back in time a thousand years and experiencing life in a real medieval village! About 10 years ago,a French historian restored a castle in Burgundy and thought to build a new one using medieval building methods. He found a piece of land in Burgundy and started to construct a real medieval castle employing artisans who use ancient methods... More

This was actually the second time we've been to this attraction - the first time was in October of 2010. It was fascinating to see all the progress over 9 months yet to realize how long it's going to ultimately take using medieval methods. You start to appreciate why some of the great cathedrals took decades to build! We speak... More

Forget steel and concrete. Leave your modern tools behind. Electricity or gas engines? You're 800 years early. For here you are, building a fortified castle in the style of 12th century Philippe Auguste, using only 12th century tools and techniques, sourcing your stone, wood, earth and water from the land surrounding your site. Guédélon is really three things. The core... More

We went with our two young kids to this medieval building site in the forest in central France. It was cold and rainy, and we don't speak much French but we are still talking about it weeks later. Yes, it is different from seeing a "real" castle that is hundreds of years old, but that's the point really - getting... More

On our way from Paris to Burgundy, we decided to stop and investigate Chantier Médiéval de Guédelon (Guedelon Castle). Visiting this place felt like we have traveled back to medieval times to see how people built castles. Who thought about this project had a brilliant and refreshing idea. Unlike a museum where everything is neatly arranged and sits still, this... More

Like the previous reviewer I found this 'castle under construction' a bit of a strange proposition. On a 25 year timescale, with completion slated for 2021, you're basically walking into a 13th Century building site. The premise is interesting, let's see what it was like to build these castles with their contemporary techniques, but I tihnk the actual execution could... More

To be honest I found our trip to Guedelon castle really quite dull and no substitute for a trip to a proper medieval castle. For me, part of the appeal of a castle whether ruined or intact is the history behind it. Without some sort of context it doesn't seem real. Guedelon feels like a theme park and there's no... More
