Great views of the city. Wonderful museums about the area and world war II and a zoo for kids. Vauban's fortifications are very impressive. Audio guides in several languages available. nice restaurant and cafe as well.

The Citadelle is like a one-stop shopping cultural experience, from the buildings designed by Vauban to the amazing and moving Resistance and Deportation museum, an aquarium, insectarium, and zoo. Like other reviewers, the zoo (well, all zoos) saddens me, though I have to admit that seeing baboons hanging out in the moat of a 17th century military fortification was cool...

You could easily spend a day here from the museums to the animals to the marine life to walking the ramparts. Great bit of history and much more.

I spent five hours at The Resistance Museum, an extraordinary and moving experience documenting man's inhumanity to man (once again) and then capped by walking past baboons taken from their tropical habitat, imprisoned in a deep empty stone pit and made to endure -15 degree temperatures. The penned in ostriches also looked miserable. Man's inhumanity to animals? Do we need...

We went to the Citadelle not knowing what to expect, and could have spent even more time here! In addition to providing incredible views of the city and surrounding area, the Citadelle also has several attractions located throughout the grounds. There's a wonderfully fun zoo, an insectarium, and a World War II Resistance Museum, as well as a couple of...

the citadelle is truly a wonder of history and beauty. i loved the view from the turrets and the history it tells. what i did not like was the zoo. it is very old fashioned with the animals prisoners to the environment. either update it, or get rid of it.

Definitely worth a visit - in addition to the must-see (the citadelle itself, the UNESCO world heritage site engineered by Vauban) the site offers various other attractions such as an impressive (by its pictures and texts) museum on World War II (focused on the deported and the members of the French resistance) and a small zoo. The ticket price includes...

Besançon is built in a loop of the Doubs river, so it is almost entirely surrounded by water. On the top of the hill there is an enormous fortress built by Vaudan - the Citadelle. I made my way up there on foot, but there is a little tourist "train" which you can take. The entrance ticket allows you to...
