Architecturally, there is little of note around this large square, and the unrelenting traffic makes the central island (which has the best views) virtually impossible to reach. However, the surrounding area is one of the most lively in Paris, especially at night with a lot of bars along rue de la Roquette and rue de Lappe. More

I like this place. Reminds me of Union Square in New York. Lots of people hanging around and discussing the world. They might be protesting or arguing or just hanging out but all are there to express themselves. Celebrate the French Bastille Day by visiting the Bastille monument on the square. This was the start of one our walks and the Bastille monument located in the square is very beautiful and detailed. A good stop but be careful because there are a lot of tourist sharks wanting to sell you thing. Just say no. More
