The beautiful museum is filled with classic realist oil paintings, but many are exquisite and fascinating. Though the docents were plentiful and attentive, visitors can get quite close to the paintings. In addition to the paintings the museum offers beautiful ceramic figurines, serving pieces, and unique furniture. The grounds include a garden (just to look at, I think). A complete... More

Musee Cognacq-Jay is discreetly tucked away in a small street in the Marais, and is easy to miss. Depending on the exhibit, though, it is worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood. Just about half of the building is used for the actual museum, and most of that space is vertical, so be advised if stairs present a... More

This museum is filled with the acquisitions of the Cognacq-Jays, a couple who started the Samaritaine Department Store. Though seeing the permanent collection is free, the museum is relatively uncrowded. Audio guides are offered for a fee. The couple took a keen interest in 18th century (predominantly French) art, furniture, and furnishings, so this is a good way to learn... More

The beauty of this museum is that it was not over crowded like many of the more better-known museums and you can get up close to the wonderful paintings and furniture and look at them without being elbowed and bumped into! Entry to the museum is free but I would highly recommend paying a few euros for the audio commentary.... More
