It is a cemetery of almost epic conception. Bones of maybe 130.000 unidentifiable people. How do you deal with loss of that proportion? This is the best try they could come up with in 1923.

The area is littered with great WW1 places to visit, old trenches, forts that were captured by the Germans, cemeteries of all nations, old bunkers and Stollen, as well as the unmissable Ossuary, where the bones of 135,000 French and german Soldiers lie, side by side in glass fronted vaults. Do remember to read up and research the battle of...

One of the most unnerving places I've ever been. Fort Douamont is a must visit for anyone interested in was history.

I didn't pay for the museum, but a note to say that the outside is currently being renovated. Huge parking lot, so obviously the most popular attraction of the Verdun sites. There's free photos to look through, a walk around the monument and you'll see some human bones in the windows. The French cemetery across the street is also under...

No understanding if the great war is complete without a cost to Verdun, and no visit to Verdun is complete without seeing the fort.

It is worth a look to see the major arteries within the...

Even for non-war buffs, this is a must visit site if you're in northern France. You can smell, taste and feel the battlefield thanks to the pillboxes, trenches and undulating landscape atop the hill. Very sobering and very worth it.

Visited in August. I would strongly recommend a trip here for anyone with an interest in WW1. Fort Douaumont was built during the late 19th century and was used through out WW1 and WW2.
The previous review describes very well the layout and how the fort has been 'ravaged' by bombardment and shells. Its' position is high up on the...

Visited here in august 2005 and is highly recommended for history buffs. The whole area is pocked with artillery craters and the fort itself has suffered from direct hits. The fort is open until 1830 in the summer and we did the visit in about an hour, I think the admission was about 8 euros. You walk through at your...
