The Cathedrale of St. Etienne is a conglomerate of two different building periods. The church combines both elements of the earlier Romanesque architecture as well as the later Gothic style. The main altar has an engraving of St. Stephen's martyrdom. The Quire contain stalls that are several hundred years old. There are 14 side chapels in the building. When we... More

Probably reflecting what was common in France and the rest of Europe where construction often took place over hundreds of years, St Etienne was conceived and built over the period from the 13th to the 17th centuries with parts even earlier than that. The choir and the knave do not line up even. St Etienne is therefore a bit of... More

Undoubtedly impressive on the inside and out, but, with so many churches and cathedrals about, one can risk cathedrals overload in Toulouse. When you then compare it against what - say - Albi has to offer, it can begin to seem somewhat run of the mill. More

The outside of the cathedral is really gorgeous. I don't know much about architecture, but even I could see that the flying buttresses were impressive. It's fairly large and the grounds are well kept, so it's worth it to walk around before or after entering. The inside of the cathedral is fairly standard. Large and full of religious paintings. It's... More

Just don't go out of your way. It's a weird conglomeration of artistic styles, and certainly not the greatest of what Toulouse has to offer in medieval architecture. If it's on your path, go in, otherwise don't bother. More

The cathedral is a most unusual shape and a fine building. Like the other churches in Toulouse it is historic built on a foundation of a thousand years old, and a most impressive design and size. More

A really interesting cathedral with a very helpful tour guide pamphlet explaining what was in the chapels. Best to go early in the day to avoid the crowds. More

interesting mix of Roman and later architecture, an amazing altarpiece and some stunning windows. We were there on Sunday am just before service, so the organists was playing, and several early church-goers were praying - very calm and peaceful More
