This monument can be seen from some miles away. It stands on the site of an old mansion house and commands a great view over the surrounding countryside. It is beautiful. It is breath-taking. It is a memorial to a dreaful, loss of human life. There are three places in the Somme that really get to me, Mametz Wood as... More

This monument brings home the horror and waste of the first World War. Why could nobody see the senselessness of throwing lives away when technology was changing the way wars were fought? Men with rifles going over the top against machine guns, idiotic! This monument is awesome in its setting and in its own way beautiful. However, when I started... More

This can be seen from miles away, particularly from where the reserve allied troops would be moving up to the line. It is a place of utter destruction, and the village of Thiepval no longer exists. At the bottom of the hill on the allied side you can climb over a wall and find things untouched for a century. More

We went on the 95th Anniversary of my great cousin William taking part in the battle of the Somme in July 1916. His name isn't on the walls at Thiepval as he has his own stone in the cemetery in nearby Corbie. Died on July 16th 1916. Reading all the names of the missing is very sobering and a reminder... More

We have been here several times and are always amazed at the size and the grandeur of this amazing memorial. You can feel the atmosphere of reverence and there are notices telling you to act with reverence as you enter, it works. We have many relatives on the memorial here and unless you have the correct pier and face number you... More

The free visitor centre has displays and audio visual displays of the Battle of the Somme in 1916, which is well worth an hour or so. Nearby is the vast, impresive memorial. Recommended for those wishing to find more about More

Anyone visiting the Somme region should not miss a visit to Thiepval Memorial and the excellent Visitor Centre as the experience is something to remember for years after! The Visitors Centre is excellent, however the memorial is a remarkable piece of engineering and architecture and the list of names of the fallen commemorated here is mind blowing. More

You can see it for miles as this monument sits among the French fields. A fitting memorial to the Commonwealth soldiers lost on the Somme. More

Thiepval is a dominant and striking memorial that gigantically rises from the wood on the hill where it stands amongst the scenic Picardie countryside. It is colossal in size and has a strong and proud aura (reflecting the fallen that it represents) and cannot fail to have an emotional impact on all who view it. We visited on a beautiful... More

Been to Thiepval three time now and it never ceases to amaze me. The sheer size of the memorial and the number of names listed just blows me away. The setting is so peaceful and tranquil - now! But less than 100 years ago it would have been a scene of death and destruction (including my great-uncle, who is listed... More
