I normally take Le Shuttle, but DFDS was recommended by a friend. If you have more time available, then the ferry crossing offers a great break from driving. Terminal in Dunkerque is rather sparse - fast food (closed on my visit) and a toilet. The ferry was pleasant, and not overful. I upgraded to 1st class (also recommended). There's a...

Quiet Cross-Overs, without Touring Cars & busses by regular services. Every 2 hrs a sailing. (one less on sat. evening).
Verry nice, but long waiting times by check-inn. Calais services = faster check in.
