This rugged landmark near Aix en Provence is "Cezanne's Mountain". He painted it more than a hundred times in different seasons and light. The drive and view of this mountain are just beautiful. Two wineries in the area that we enjoyed were St. Ser and Henri Bonnaud, both excellent wines and great views of Mr. Sainte Victoire. More

Cezanne must have really liked this mountain, as he painted it so many times. For us it was not a disappointment. The scenery around the mountain was simply beautiful in spring, and the drive around the mountain was one of our highlights in Provence. More

We went to the Vauvenarge side of the mountain by local bus. We had a very scenic walk and it took us 90 minutes to reach the Prieuré and another 15 minute to get to the Cross of the Provence! It was a windy day and so it wasn't astonishing that the wind was quite strong up there. From the... More

Lovely spot for a picnic - we had a french person walk past saying 'bon appetit' as we were eating ours. It also has a helpful little tourist info in the car park. More

We went to Aix for a weekend, which, it turned out, is quite a long time in what is basically a charming but small town. But if you fancy an easily-reached change of scene, for only a one Euro fare on bus L140, you can take a trip up a dam called the 'Barrage de Biment'. It's about a 15... More

To view the Mountain from a superb hiking location try the Bibemus plateau park. Unsurpassed views of the mountain and the Zola damn etc. Beware - no washrooms of any kind! More

Thanks to the many canvasses of Cezanne, this has become one of the most famous mountains in all of Europe. Although you would not think so from the perspectives that Cezanne generally selected, it is a high ridge of enormous length that dominates a huge area of Provence. There are several routes to the highest point where the Croix de... More

The Mont Ste Victoire, about 10 km outside of Aix, is a natural mountainous jewel. The limestone rock reflects light, turning blue, grey, pink or orange throughout the day. Cézanne glorified the Ste-Victoire by putting it at the center of his paintings many times. I posted about it on this Facebook Page about Provence: http://www.facebook.com/VisitProvence More
