A great way to spend a few hours - head all the way up to the top (near where the cafe is located) to experience amazing views across the river and to the mountains in the distance. The audio guide is very well done and explains everything that you need to know. You can also purchase a discount ticket to... More

On a stop over in Avignon we decided to take the guided tour of the massive medieval papal palace, the Palais des Papes. It lies within 4.3km of preserved stone ramparts and it was a cold overcast day when we visited the Palais and you could not imagine how un-cosy this huge world heritage site could have been all those... We have recently visited the Pope's Palace In Avignon and have enjoyed tremendously the time spent there. A tip:try to start the visit as early as possible 9,30 when there is not a big crowd, later when we had finished our visit, around 12, the line for tickes was huge and the crowd visiting the palace quite big so I... It is worth seeing because of it's history, but there are lots of steep steps from one part of the palace to the other and it is very bare inside. Unfortunately, you can't take photos of the best rooms which contain the alfrescos. More

We like the Pope´s Place, and it´s probably inevitable that you choose this as you 1st place to see in Avignon. However, we would enjoyed more the visit if the texts explained all the history of the site and the pope´s that lived there would be in English. They´re a only in French. Although we had the audio-guide with us,... More

The Pope's Palace in Avignon is a must to see place in Provence. Try to understand that they actually lived hear for long time. Avignon is the town of the popes. At the foot of the palace is a large area where people come to sit and enjoy the atmosphere, to sit in a café, to plan their visit in... More

Lots of interesting stuff for the history buffs and art enthusiasts. I found the automated tour guide boring would have preferred a live person. Parking was difficult at first but there's a garage under the palace that was affordable(3 euros/2hrs), just hard to spot. More

The building itself was very interesting and wonderfully maintained. It was not free to tour but like all (or most) attractions in France, they did offer English audio guides. The palace itself was completely bare of any historical artifacts. There was very little to view. If you're pressed for time, I'd pass up going inside the palace and head to... More

It was a spectacular building, that we unfortunatly couldn't take photo's of some rooms but the rest was fine. The tourist guide was a multi-lingual hand held that was easy to use and made it easy to visualise the rooms in their former glory. 1 suggestion though would be to go early. More
