We were walking to visit St. Paul de Mausolee, the asylum that Van Gogh stayed in for a year in St. Remy de Provence, and happened upon this incredible site just across the road. We had not heard from any of our friends about this, and were amazed to find the ruins of a HUGE Roman village, with signs describing... More

At the very least, stopping to see the monument and the arch are a must. They are right on the edge of town. More

This is a finely presented site, with clear descriptions of what the community must have been like, established in the 6th and 7th century BC. It is tucked in against les Alpilles, low hills that dominate the view to the south of St Remy, and has all the elements that we now assume as part of daily living --shopping centres,... More

Utnil we visited we didn't realise how well preserved the former Roman town of Glanum was. While not large, it is well worht a visit. The signs (in French and English) are well placed and just the right length. The structures highlighted are interesting, as is their history. As an Australian, it is hard to believe that people lived on... More

Staying near this archeological site so decided to spend a morning there and at the Saint Paul de Mausole monastery where Van Gogh recuperated after cutting off his ear. The Roman era site was beautifully organized with detailed drawings in French and English showing the excavation in the present and how it looked in it's prime which was unbelievably helpful... More

If you find yourself in St Remy en Provence, the archaeological site of Glanum is a must see. Located on the southern outskirts of St Remy in a lovely little valley backed by cliffs, adjacent to the monastery of St Paul de Mausole, which later became a sanitorium where Vincent van Gogh spent some time, the upper part of the... This site has one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Europe. It is not to be missed if you are within driving distance. While it is small it is filled with many interesting and unique things to view. It is easy to walk around and view. More
