Her name was Mathilde. She made Van Gogh come alive again on a tour of the grounds. She pointed out the crest in the Alpilles...seen in so many of his works...from the field where he often sat and painted. The Mistral was blowing hard during our visit...amazing how he captured it on canvas. The reproductions of Vincent's work are placed...

Lovely walk just past the tourist office ( as you face away from the office, the street to your left) beautiful residential neighborhood, gives the feel of the colors, local, people and place Van Gogh loved and painted during his one year stay at the asylum in St. Remy. The large placards along the street show some of Van Gogh's paintings...

We loved the Promenade dans l'univers de Vincent Van Gogh in Saint Remy, France. We started at the Tourist information office and made the walk following the painting boards to the sanitarium where Van Gogh lived. The boards show you his paintings in front of his inspiration for the painting. They also give information about where the painting is currently...

We approached the hospital by road and studied all the Van Gogh art along the way. There is more art in the hospital - especially the garden. It looked as if it would be a lovely place to spend some time until you read the interpretative panels upstairs and realised how the inmates were treated. It makes the visitor understand...

We looooved this visit! It is totally worth the 4euros fee! Van Gogh stayed here voluntarily for a year after he cut his ear. The medical staff was understanding enough to allow him to paint and let him leave the premises accompanied when he felt better to paint some more. Here he painted most of his work, among them the...

We walked there from St Remy and found it an interesting experience. There is quite a lot to read if you want and there are translations in English. Some people may find walking around an ex mental hospital depressing but it tells an interesting story of past mental health practices and part of the Van Gogh story.

It was a moving experience to see the place Van Gogh attempted to recover physically and mentally after cutting off part of his ear. To look through the same barred windows to the lovely garden below was fascinating. Also fascinating but very disturbing were the printed materials describing the horrors of psychiatric care of that era. Will the same be...

Do the walk! See his room and step in his steps.
If you are expecting the landscape to be comparable to Van Gogh paintings you will be disappointed. There are signs along the peaceful walk up St Remy's streets towards to the asylum, but I think I had my expectations a little too high. St. Paul de Mausolee has wonderful...

As of March 2012, the Van Gogh exhibit at the hospital was missing directional signs. Visitors were leaving after thinking the site was closed. It doesn't help that the single visible sign with the words "Van Gogh" led to the mental hospital itself and not the museum. (Make that mistake, and you'll end up behind locked gates--seriously!)
In cases they...
