Visited July, 2007- at the upper terminal it was windy, with intermittent rain/sleet so the cable ride down to the glacier and grotto was shut. We took the small train up the mountainside and arrived at Montenvers station which took 20 mins approx with excellent views of the Chamonix valley. Facilities are very good and include restaurant, cafe, souvenir shop and alpine museum. We took the cable car down towards the glacier (you can walk) and then the steps further down again to the entrance... more
Mer de Glace is probably the most spectacular sight I've ever seen and well worth every penny for the train ride to see it. There's a shop, restaurant and galleries at the top next to the train station if you can take your eyes off the views. The ice caves are a must too - very pretty and interesting. If... more
THe ride is well worth the $22.50 For that you get to see the tunnel through the galcier and the gondola ride down to it. Beautiful blue ice within the glacier itself. Train ride has nice views. Food up the top is limited. more
