..but not only a park ;-) The "Englische Garten" is named as English garden because an English architect was the project leader when the park was setup in English style in the year 1789.
This park is one of largest city parks of the world (even bigger than "Central Park" in New York.)

A huge park in the middle of the city.
With a clean river in the middle of it so clean people use to have bath in it.
There's a point where boys do surf in the river (inside Munich!)
In 1 hour walk, did not find any waste left around.
Forest size trees and big grass lands

we were there on a sunday evening and the garten was empty. the garten is huge, spanning a few acres, but there were no sign boards or directions, so very easy to get lost. thus we never adventured much inside

I have been to Munich a few times and it was never mentioned to go to the gardens. Basically, it is a green forest oasis (not really a garden) basically in the hear of Munich to stroll, walk and have authentic, inexpensive food listening to a local band playing. Great place to relax and see the "real" Munich.

Enjoyed an afternoon at the English Garden - sitting in the sun at the Chinese Tower, drinking beer with the locals, and listening to the band. A perfect time!

Extremely extensive, good walking paths, nice beer gardens.

Family friendly place with lots of activities. We rented the Bike Peddler to take us in and enjoyed great food at the Beer Garden.
Go, you won't be dissapointed!

We loved the Chinese pagoda. Our only regret was not trying the stecklfish on a stick! A must is to see the surfers!

I think I'm a little spoiled because I saw Burchart Gardens in BC, Canada last year...big, elaborate flower gardens. The English Garden was more like a Central Park...pleasant enough, but I was expecting something different. I did enjoy watching the surfers.
