This iconic gateway was impressive when I visited Berlin before the Wall came down, but now there is a proliferation of rather tacky touristy stalls, which detracts from its grandeur. I was in Berlin (with the US Army) on August 13, 1961 when the Berlin Wall went up. The revered symbol of this city, the Brandenburger Tor, is now over-run with vendors, beggars, shysters and people.
