Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A visit to his remnant of the mediaeval defences is essential for anyone even remotely interested in the history of Aachen.

Built in the 13th century as part of the outer city walls, this is one of the most beautiful city gates I have seen. It is situated near a bus stop and people get off the bus and cross through the gate on their way to the Altstadt. It has become totally integrated in their lives.
You can walk in and around it and seek the lovely structure up close. Really enjoyable. It is situated in beautiful surroundings so you can take a picnic and sit on the lawns near the gate

Do not expect anything more, it is just the ramain of the medieval wall of the former capital of the Empire. However, if you are in Aachen it is worth to walk 10 minutes from the centre to visit this gate.

Not too far away from the city centre.I love history and old buildings so suited me. Only takes a few minutes to walk around it but the details of the building and it's door are beautiful

On the edge of the city center is the Ponttor which is one of the two remaining gates of the original city wall of Aachen. This north-facing gate was built in the 14th century and manned by soldiers and militia throughout the Free Imperial City of Aachen era. Today, the Ponttor is used by German Youth and Scout groups belonging to the German Scout Club (1945) and the German Scout Association Saint George. The main entrance has a Portcullis as well as a machicolation, through which things could be dropped on invading forces. A bridge passage with crenelations spanned a moat and was strengthened in the foregate with two reinforced towers (barbicans). The tower is closed to visitors, however, it is a great ediface. Allow for ~15 minute for your visit.

The Ponttor and the Pontstrasse are in the University Area which is a lively spot in the city with a nice nightlife, Restaurants, and Cafés. The Ponttor is a remain of the old city wall

A robust defense structure from 1320 built for protection against outside agressors. The main reason that after 700 years the Ponttor still stands is that Germans at the time already built solid foundations. The tower of Pisa in Italy built just a little bit earlier began to tilt because the ground at one side was too soft. It lacked a proper foundation. Times have hardly changed...
A pity you can not enter the building. According to the tourist office there are no special days it is open to the public.
