If you visit Bochum and have a day spare time you should visit the "Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum" which is one of the most famous museums of coal mining at all. This also represents the whole "Ruhr Area" because of it´s huge coal mining past, that this area is known and famous for!

The Mining (Bergbau) museum has a complete mine reconstructed in the basement which shows the big machinery and gives an impression how it is to be in a mine.
Further there is a large exposition of tools, history and minerals.
A very interesting museum for the whole family, especially for children to learn about mining.
Only bad part is that...
