We often forget that cathedrals like this were built without the use of modern tools. When you think of the man-hours and the labor of love and devotion that went into the building of a cathedral like this, it is all the more fascinating. I didn't take a tour, but just walked around on my own. I spent about a... More

Mainz is a wonderful city, and this cathedral is in the center of the city...not to be missed for a walk thru the gardens and inside- the church is amazing - I have some beautiful photos from the inside and outside of this beautiful church of the architecture and stained glass windows. More

Very nice cathedral. Not so ornate as most of the stained glass has been replaced with plain glass. Right on a square with great outdoor cafes all around so a nice to visit the cathedral and then enjoy the view from a cafe. More

This cathedral is very impressive, especially in a relatively small city like Mainz. Several other cathedrals in Germany are larger and grander, but given the picturesque setting of Mainz, this is an attraction that should not be missed. More

I'm not a big fanatic of architecture or history, but just being inside the Dom was truly inspiring and mind-blowing. I'm unsure of course how many of the current building standing is actually part of the old History (hopefully a lot are retaining from the past)... The Dom looks as if there are some different hands on it, some different... More

This isn't the most spectacular cathedral we've visited, but it is pretty. It's free to visit the cathedral, though if you want to visit the attached cathedral museum, there is a charge. we didn't have time for the museum. If you're in Mainz anyway, it's definitely worth a look, though I wouldn't go to Mainz just for this. More

The Dom has been called the most important Romanesque (i.e. 11th to 13th century) structure along the Rhine, and it is certainly the gem in the crown of Mainz's attractions. This huge, towering Romanesque cathedral dates back to 975, with most of it built during the 13th and 14th centuries. On March 27, 1188, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa... More
