I first visited this astonishing building in the early 1980s, in the frozen depths of the Cold War, when Naumburg was a neglected, shabby East German town. Even then the Cathedral was a revelation, containing as it does some of the most extraordinary stone carvings in Europe, unlike anything else I have ever seen in any church. The statues of... more
