Until just a couple of years ago, the modernist buildings were still in use as a hospital. The buildings are lovely even though they have the gothic, slightly dark air of the 18th-19th century, but patients enjoyed being there as they wards were small buildings that allowed them garden views and even going outdoors. Now the hospital itself has moved... More

Los hospitales no suelen ser precisamente lugares con encanto. Éste lo es. Llevar cámara fotográfica. More

My friend and I went to visit but wound up at the working hospital by mistake. There were no signs to the historic hospital. We met another couple who were also looking for it and they joined us on our quest. Once we got there it was wonderful. We had a guided tour and were taken through the tunnels which... More

For just 10 euros, I got to wear a bright blue hardhat and orange safety vest during an extensive tour of some of the 18 buildings at Sant Pau Hospital designed by Lluis Domenech Montaner who was also responsible for the brilliant Music Palace. We had an English speaking guide who really seemed to enjoy sharing her information and insight... More

This hospital was built by the Catalan modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner; work started in 1901 and finished by 1930. Each wing (more like building) has its own architectural design and they are connected by underground tunnels; also, each wing was named after a patron saint. Taxi drivers usually mistake it as a small town or village as they... More

Domenech i Montaner is not as famous as Gaudi, but he was also a great architect. He created many of the pavilions at the Hospital de la Santa Creu I Sant Pau in a Modernist fashion. All of the pavilions are elegant. His son Pere Domenech I Roura also worked on the pavilions. The hospital is quite tranquil and is... More

Domenech i Montaner was practicing architecture at about the same time as Gaudi. His buildings are often very ornate, in a Spanish-Moorish-Catalan way. His Palau de la Musica Catalana is one of the most beautiful buildings I've ever seem (be sure to take the 1-hour guided tour of the inside, and try to take in an evening concert). But this... More

Although the facade was covered due to construction, and nearly all the grounds had been dug up again due to construction, this place is great, very calm atmosphere, we actually had lunch there, on a small concrete bench... More

Santa Creu hospital is a made up of a spectacular collection of old buildings. It is on the hill just up the road from Gaudi's Sagrada Familia and it is easy to walk to or take the bus or metro from the Plaza Catalunya. The hospital is a world heritage sight and certainly worth seeing if you have any interest... More
