In half a day, you can see representative examples of art from the last seven centuries. This is not Spain's attic; it is a carefully-selected collection of fine art from the walls of one of Europe's wealthiest families who donated it to Spain in return for the country making available a fine building where it could be displayed. Living in Madrid, we have explored many museums and this one is our favorite. It is a nice size where you can easily view the entire museum in a half day and not feel exhausted at the end. The layout is easly to follow and clear, I recommend getting the audio guide to fully enjoy your visit. The variety of... more

They have a more diverse collection than at the Prado, including a rarity in European museums- American art. For example, there is a portrait of George Washington's cook by Gilbert Stuart, painted with the same dignity as for the president himself. There may not be as many famous paintings, but the ones here are of high quality. more

My husband enjoy visiting art museums, but we are not very knowledgable about art. This musuem's layout was very user friendly - beginning on 3rd floor in chronological order down to the first floor. 6 euros for general admission. We highly recommend the audio guide for 4 euros; it provided brief, but detailed, summaries about important art and artists throughout... more

This was the highlight of our trip to Madrid - the building is spectacularly enormous and one of the best art museums I have ever visited. Do not miss on your visit. more

A superb museum very well laid out with helpful friendly staff. Until the 18th May there is an exhibition of Modigliani which is wonderful, A small part of the exhibition is at Fundacion Caja Madrid Plaza de San Martin 1. Don't be put off by the queues you get through quickly. This is definitely something you should not miss. more

Althought the Museo del Prado has some well known masterpieces, the Thyssen surprises the tourists and artlovers with its stunning collection of works from every painter you fancy. Cozy, welcoming and charming. Allow 3 hours for a "quick" visit. more

What an amazing collection. Do not miss this if you're in Madrid. I'd recommend it over the other two major galleries in the city. more

Like many other reviewers, I actually thought the Thyssen was the best museum of the big 3 in Madrid. It's hard to believe that this is a private collection. There's a decent collection of Impressionists, a few Rodin sculptures, and a decent range of styles. They also had a couple of Van Goghs when I was there. It's right across... more

We spent a week in Madrid and the Thyssen was far-and-away the best attraction we saw. The collection is organized chronologically from the 1300s to the present day, with 5-20 paintings representing each major art movement. We purchased the audioguide and revelled in an engaging, thorough, yet manageable survey course in the history of Western art. Each room has an... more
