They have a more diverse collection than at the Prado, including a rarity in European museums- American art. For example, there is a portrait of George Washington's cook by Gilbert Stuart, painted with the same dignity as for the president himself. There may not be as many famous paintings, but the ones here are of high quality. more

My husband enjoy visiting art museums, but we are not very knowledgable about art. This was the highlight of our trip to Madrid - the building is spectacularly enormous and one of the best art museums I have ever visited. Do not miss on your visit. more

A superb museum very well laid out with helpful friendly staff. Until the 18th May there is an exhibition of Modigliani which is wonderful, A small part of the exhibition is at Fundacion Caja Madrid Plaza de San Martin 1. Don't be put off by the queues you get through quickly. This is definitely something you should not miss. more

Althought the Museo del Prado has some well known masterpieces, the Thyssen surprises the tourists and artlovers with its stunning collection of works from every painter you fancy. Cozy, welcoming and charming. Allow 3 hours for a "quick" visit. more
