One of the most impressive buildings in Madrid, right by Plaza Colón.
The book collection is fascinating but if you don´t have time to roam around books, the building itself is worthy of a visit.

The facade of the National Library is very impressive. It has a classical look with eight columns supporting a pediment with many statues of Spanish men known for their literacy. There are impressive steps leading to the entrance and these have six large statues of literate men from Spanish history, such as Cervantes, Alfonso X (The Wise), and San Isidoro...

The visit to the Biblioteca Nacional is not to be missed by anyone who loves books and history. The museum has a compact yet extremely rich exhibition on the history of print and other media. You should also find interesting temporary exhibitions - currently it's about magic. A must go off the beaten track.
