On 12 February 1816 the San Carlo was destroyed by fire. The Theatre was re-designed by the architect Antonio Niccolini and rebuilt within ten months on order of King Ferdinand IV. In 1845 there was additional refurbishment and, by 1854, the theatre's interior appearance changed to the now-traditional red and gold. Now carefully restored to its former splendour, the San Carlo is the oldest working theatre in Europe. « less

Beautiful opera sung in old classical surroundings. Sadly there were two changes in the original cast as they were deemed "indisposed". This did not detract from the opera itself which were enjoyed very much. More

We visited on our last day, waited nearly two hours for the tour, only to find out it was in Italian. Guide couldn't/wouldn't tell us when the next English speaking tour would go, so we went round with the Italian speaking group.. not a lot of good! More

I was very nostalgic when seeing the San Carlo again. When I lived in Napoli many years ago, I shared season tickets with a friend and was able to see Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, Barber of Seville, Madama Butterfly as well as other operas in this incredible place. Our seats were next to the President's box, which I really liked, but... More

We booked tickets online months in advance for La Boheme. The online booking worked smoothly from UK, just bring the printout and get your tickets on arrival - easy, no hassles. The performance was magnificent, great to hear a classic Italian opera sung by a top class Italian opera company. The lead roles were all powerfully sung and the famous... More

I enjoyed the (5 euro) tour but it turned out that it was Italian only at 10am and English was session was later in the day so was getting a translation from a family member as we went along. It's about 30 minutes, we saw a brief part of a rehearsal which was interesting and there was a section on... More

I was disappointed that I had missed the ballet, but we had a tour around the beautiful old theatre anyway. It is well worth a visit. More

This is such a beautiful theatre and the quality of productions is excellent. It is expensive, but really, really worth it. To enjoy an opera, operetta or ballet in such amazing surroundings is a unique experience. If you suffer from vertigo, don't go too high up. I had exercise a lot of self control before I could persuade my tummy... More

Don't be put-off by the scruffiness of the area! This is an important performance venue -- many historical performances given here. The exterior has love statues. Situated in the Piazza del Plebiscito, it has a formidable presence among the other buildings. More
