Well worth the bus trip (from Pompeii) up the steep, narrow, twisty road past a range of houses, derelict graffitied buidlings, radio masts and curious sculptures. Despite what our hostel staff told us, you can get a ride up Vesuvius on a Sunday. An easy walk to the top lets you walk around the crater and on a clear day, you can see all the way to the island of Capri and across Naples. More

There is a 'Vesuvius bus' and a 4x4 type of access run by a different company. The latter, I think, is the more expensive option but the walk is shorter, whilst the former tends to get clogged up with lots of school parties. More
