It's smaller than Pompeii, but it's so impressive to see what is left here! More

Pompeii can be difficult to walk around as it is such a large area, Ercolano on the other hand is smaller and in my opinion better than Pompeii. I would recommend stopping here on way back to city from Pompeii. More

9 of us hired one of the guides that will meet you when you enter Herculaneum. We had a wonderful time and felt that because if was smaller than Pompeii it was more meaningful. More

Visited this site in May. It is like stepping back in time. The preservation of the buildings is amazing. If you climb over the fence on the ancient beach (your not supposed to so I did not do it) you can look through some slatted wooden doors and see some of the skeletons of the people who died there. They... More

Had been to Pompei a few years prior and really wanted to see this second Roman town. We used the local train to get there from Sottento and a 10 minute walk down a hill to the site gave us chance for a drink and rest before visiting here. We got a joint ticket with Pompei which helped us jump... More

The current excavations have revealed ancient ruins which give a much better insight into the ancient roman way of life than do the ruins at Pompeii. The painted plasterworks and decoration are much better preserved than anything its neighbour has to offer. The whole site is much smaller than Pompeii and it is therefore easier to spend more time studying the... Comparing Herculaneum and Pompeii, is like comparing a seaside village and a thriving city. Herculaneum is less than a quarter the size of Pompeii, so it is easier to cover the whole site in less time. It is also better preserved. You do however miss out on the big common buildings that only cities can afford. Hence if you have... More

Though less extensive than the more famous site at Pompeii, the ruins at Herculaneum are better preserved. Many buildings still have traces of their original decoration. Easy access from Naples by the Circumvesuviana railway and just a short walk down hill from the station. More
