I elected to forgo the guides for hire at the entrance and use a map and my own guide book. I did some stumbling around blindly, but I had a whole day and good walking legs. It was nice to this on my own pace and focus on things I really wanted to see. Take a sack lunch and a... more

I always wanted to go to Pompeii and it didn't disappoint. Allow a full day here. Don't skimp on time. Make sure you pay a little extra and get the headphones to know what you are looking at. Enjoy the history, enjoy the atmosphere an incredible place which should be on everyone's wish list. more

Pompeii was a good take in. It's remarkable how well some of the ruins were preserved. We used the audio tour that the site offered. It was almost a little too informative. If you listened to every single recording you would be there forever. I would recommend picking out key sites within Pompeii and just listening to those recordings if... more

In July. we took an excursion from our cruise ship for the morning 4 hour tour. It was very informative and extremely interesting. Definitely go with a tour guide who can explain what you are looking out and show you the highlites of the place. Actually see pictures, rooms, buildings that have amazing survived since 79AD! Bring water, sunscreen, hat,... more

Walk across square into station and buy 3 day Travel pass Artecard. This give free entrance to 2 attractions and free rail travel. Left luggage at station which we used 3 hrs for approx... more

Pompeii is wonderful but outside down the hill from the station is the standard touristy rip-off.We ended up in a "restaurant" across the road from the main mess which looked good with a good few diners.Ended up with 2 pizzas-honestly the worst in our experience-and 2 small beers and paid 27 euros.Discovered the bill included a cover charge at the... more

We visited the ancient city of Pompeii as part of a Rick Steves tour. The history and ingenuity at this site is so amazing. Be sure to get a local guide so that you know what you're looking at! The guide will point out the important things and let you bypass those things of little relevance. Also, you get some... more

Drobe our rental car from Sorrento to Pompeii even though all travel sites and blogs advised to take train and avoid expensive parking spots. Found many empty spots on the streets surrounding the grounds of Pompeei and just near the Basilica nearby to walk to after. It was one euro per hour and give yourself at least 4-1/2 hours -... more

I took a bus tour from Rome to Pompeii and I found it truly an amazing site to see. To walk the ancient streets that used to be a thriving city and be able to see the well preserved city was a treat. Our tour guide was a great source of info. You could do it on your own by... more
