About
The history if the new exhibition space for the Musei Capitolini in the former Giovanni Montemartini Thermoelectric Centre, an extraordinary example of industrial archaeology converted into a museum, began in 1997 with the transfer of hundreds of sculptures to the new location during the restructuring works carried out across much of the Capitoline complex. In an atmospheric game of contrasts, the old machinery of electricity production became the backdrop for masterpieces of ancient sculpture and precious goods found in the excavations of the late nineteenth century and the 1930s. The display reconstructs some of the great monumental complexes and illustrates the development of the ancient city from the Republican era to the late imperial age.

    Bidden gem for history buffs
Always wanted to visit this museum affiliated to the Capitolin Museum. A great choice to incorporate a museum for classical history in an old power plant Sith statues between big machines. The texts are in Italian and English. The museum is huge, we spent some one and a half hours inside. A great place to visit.

    Romans x steampunk!
An excellent museum which presented the exhibits in a novel and exciting way. It was like Romans x steam punk because of the old industrial power station setting but was off the usual tourist track, so no queues and no crowds. Definitely worth seeing and best to buy a combined ticket for the Capitoline Museum as well.

    Far Exceeded expectations!
I happened upon this museum when I was walking to the basilica of S. Paolo fuori le Mura from our apartment in Testaccio. Even then, we thought it might be interesting to see the colori dei Romani exhibit on Roman mosaics. When we returned to see the mosaics, we were offered a family ticket so pairs 20 Euros for 2 adults and 2 children. The exhibit itself was great but the standing collection blew me away…so many precious and notable pieces in a venue that is well off the beaten path. Rome has been excavated for so long and in different places that it’s great to see some of these great relics displayed safely in one place. Located in an old decommissioned power station, the artifacts are set against the backdrop of switchboards, instrument panels and boilers which is presented as a museum in and of itself. The Montemartini complex closes at 7p and latest entry is at 6p. Strongly recommended for anyone staying in Testaccio, Ostiense or Trastevere.

Reclaimed industrial architecture highlights classical statuary
Centrale Montemartini is off the beaten track but very much worth a visit. The contrast of the marble statuary against the industrial backdrop of a de-commissioned power plant is striking. It made the art pop. There were few visitors and it was a relief to see the art works without crowds of people. It's a bright airy display space and a brilliant way to combine salvaged modern industrial architecture with classical sculpture and mosaics. Highly recommended.

    Old and New.
This is secreted away in a refurbished electricity generating plant in the former industrial area of Ostiense. The displays are a juxtaposition of modern (1930s) grey diesel engines and other power generting equipment against ancient (2000 year old) Roman white marble artifacts, along with the smell of oil and diesel. On level 1 surrounding the diesel engines is a mosaic floor from the time of the which, although modern, is another unusual feature of the plant. Apart from the Romn artifcats (some of which are copies), there is a restored train from the time of Pope Pius IX (mid 1800s). A bit away from the major tourist area but easy to access via public transport. Worth a visit.

A fresh new view of ancient sculpture
This is an engaging way to examine ancient sculptures. They looked refreshed by their juxtaposition with the electrical apparatus of the former industrial facility. The curators and installation staff have made ancient works seem vibrant and exciting by placing them in a completely different environment. If you have museum fatigue, you'll be revived by this visit.

Stunning museum off the beaten path
The Montemartini is an amazing museum off the regular tourist rout, nevertheless it is so well worth the detour. This ancient sculpture museum was built in a former power plant, featuring Roman and Greek statues, beautiful sarcophagus and mosaics. The contrast between the archeological artifacts and the industrial machinery is striking, intriguing and stimulating. Allow at least 2 hours (can spend double that time). Not to be missed!

This is museum is the 'sister' museum of the Capitoline Museum. You can buy a combined ticket to cover both locations but I just rocked up and bought a ticket at the entrance for €10 (June 2023).
It has some great exhibits, lots of ancient sculptures set within the old industrial complex. There are lots of ancient mosaics. It also houses Pope Pius IX's train (very fancily decorated).
They give you a pamphlet when you enter which includes a map of the site. The museum was nearly empty when I went.
It was fairly easy to reach using public transport. Catch Metro Linea B to Garbatella, exit the station and take the pedestrian bridge, cross a car park, cross the road and you'll see the museum. The entrance is down a little road. There is a drinking fountain near the entrance.
My highlights were :-
- A model of the the tomb of Marcus Vergilius Eurysaces the baker
- Statue of Agrippina Minor
- Popes Train
I combined this visit with a trip to the Basilica of St Pauls Beyond the Walls which is a short walk south on Via Ostiense.
