I was pleasantly surprised with this site, which was free with my Roma pass. Originally constructed as a tomb for Emporer Hadrian, this became a prison and papal residence during the Middle Ages. The popes' residences were the highlight for me with beautiful frescoes and interiors (nothing like the Vatican Museum but still beautiful and interesting). The 360 degree view... More

Castel Sant'Angelo used as a city fortress for Pope, located very close to Vatican City seems to be indestructable from the outside. It still has old catapult in one of the atriums, and offers yet another view of Rome from the roof top. Coming to the castle over the bridge decorated with statues of angels is memorable, indeed. The Catel Santangelo it´s famous as a fortress. If you visit inside you see the old guns and a beauty landscape of Vatican and Rome. But the bridge decorated with marble Angels statues is really a beautifull portrait of Rome. Must see !!! More

There was a very short line to get in. It took longer to pick up our audios. You are required to leave something of value, such as your driver's license as security. The audio is what makes the visit worthwhile. I don't see the point of going if one does not know what one is looking at. The cafe at... More

This is a lovely castle to walk by, but I have to say we did not bother to enter, as the lines were too long and the weather wasn't perfect for that. Still, it gives several photo ops, especially to fans of the "Angels and demons" movie. The surroundings of the castle are rather poorly maintained with numerous beggers, food... More

We skipped the audio tour and I don't think we missed much. I read about the place before we came so we knew what we were looking at. Ramps into the "castle" are extensive and a little steep if you have trouble walking. Terrific balcony for viewing and enjoying a beverage. Very nice exhibit while we were there too. I... More

The main attraction is it architecture and its changes along the time. From the Roman times, when Adriano Imperor should have been buried there to the middle ages and Renascente and Modern Ages, it became a fortress. If you do not appreciate history or architeture, there is really not much to be seen besides being an imponent construction. But if... More

This is not the most attractive castle that you will see having started as a mausoleum and then a defence for the Pope which then got added to as money and need arose. The inside is interesting and the residences of the Pope not as large as i expected There was a good unconnected exhibition on when we were there... More

This ofter overlooked attraction deserves your attention. Although there is little to see inside, really, the views from the top are well worth it. More
