This odd this musuem/cemetery is in the heart of Rome. The monks turned their dead brethren into altar pieces. Bones of monks become angels, sconces, cherubim, and much more. It is darkly fascinating.

A series of four crypts literally decorated with the bones of 4000 monks. There was a 1 Euro entry fee but what you saw was priceless. Not on the same scale as the Paris Catacombs but the skeletons here were even more thoughtfully arranged around the walls, floor and ceiling.

This was amazing. Someone told me to go there, but would not tell my why. Just said that I wouldn't forget it. And I won't. I have been to crypts and ossuaries and catacombs, but this was by far the most creative and interesting. For a donation of 1 euro is it definitely worth the visit.

This attraction was the main reason for my trip to Rome this time (other than my boyfriend's mothers birthday) so I was thrilled to finally arrive. Easy to find directly outside the Piazza Barberini subway station (slightly up hill) and only 1 euro each to see the crypts. There are many signs saying no photography but if you are discreet,...

The art created with human bones is stunning. Even more than that are some of the stories told by the guide. In the last room there are two small human skelatons. These were the relatives of a monk who were dying from the plague. They asked to be made a part of their uncle's art. The Coat of Arms is...

It was worth the 1 euro. My 7 year old would have loved this- I wanted to take a picture, but pictures were not allowed "out of respect for our brothers' remains" which I thought was pretty laughable given that they made LIGHT FIXTURES out of the bones!! There are postcards at the end- which 7yo just loved. Glad we...

If you are into the Catacombs, then you'd like this cemetery. It's a bit odd and eerie to see human monk bones formed into wall motifs and decorations, and the music is creepy too, but it's an OK thing to do if you are in the area.
I also can't help but feel sorry for the ALIVE monks walking around...

There is nothing average about seeing thousands of human bones formed into art... it was interesting, but I'm not sure I liked it. If nothing else, it is thought-provoking. I am glad that you could see the crypt in 10 minutes as I would not want to spend more time there.

Playing and demonstrating in human bones as decoration is isgusting. It cannot being presented as part of a holy and serious temple or a church. Condemn it!!!

If you have about 15 minutes to spare and a couple of teenagers to impress take them to see the monks bones at the Capuchin Crypt in the Santa Maria Della Concezione in the Via Veneto. It doesn't take long to walk through the crypt so don't make it a day trip but if you are in the area it...
