We went to the square during a Papal Mass (Palm Sunday) and it was truly phenomenal. If you are Catholic and have some flexibility in travel dates, find out when the Pope is leading the mass. Wednesday, April 25, 2012-Liberation Day in Italy and the pope was there for a papal audience. I guess he is there most Wednesdays so they close St. Peter's Basilica until 1pm. No visit to Rome is complete without experiencing the sheer size of St. Peter's square.
We've visited this magnificent square twice - once when it was almost empty and the second time when it was packed with over half a million people who came to the Easter ceremony with the Pope blessing the audiences in dozens of languages.

As a person of Christian faith, this was a spiritual experience to visit during Easter. The area was very open and clean even with the mass amounts of people that were attending.
