This square is possibly the most un-Itallian of Itallian squares. The dominating building, the Municipal building, is most certainly reminiscent of Centeral European design being a throw back to the days when Trieste was a port in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

As others have said this piazza is huge, worth seeing it both in the day and at night, as the experience is different.
On Sunday 6th May, there were dolphins dancing in the sea opposite the Piazza, it was an amazing sight.

This is the center of the city where is located the city hall, the magnificient governor palace and most important for the tourist, the tourist office. From this place you can also climb the hill to visit the Castello di San Giusto and the cathedral.

This is the only main square in Europe that is open on the sea. Surrounded by beautiful buildings and dominated by the San Giusto castle, piazza dell'Unita` d'Italia offers a unique view.

I think this is the place to start if you're in Trieste for the first time. The Tourist Information Office is located right next to this square. There are some interesting looking buildings on this square, and also a fountain. Take some photos, enjoy the atmosphere and the sea view for a while, and then continue to other sights in...

The Piazza, on a sunny day, is stunning in a Middle European, turn of the century (the 19th century) way, formed by monumental palaces on 3 sides, opening onto the harbor. in perfect austro-hungarian style, this square is so huge that in windy days it seems that it is never ending! the main palace in front of the sea is the city hall, and at its right there is the caffe degli specchi, a coffee-house where the intelligentia was used to meet in the early decades of 1900. it is nice...
