We visited Santa Caterina on a cloudy day so it was quite empty. There is no entrance fee but you need to be careful with the timing because only a few boats stop there and the place is apparently closed between 12 and 2pm. This monastery is built in the rock and offers a 180 degrees view of Lago Maggiore....

We were staying in central Milan & we took a train to Laveno. From there we bought an open ticket to cruise Lago Maggiore (approx EUR40 for both of us). We visited many places on the lake amongst which were Isola Madre, Isola Bella, Isola Pescatore & Stresa but the place that impressed us most was l'Eremo di Santa Caterina....
