Named after the patron saint of Milan, it was founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo (1564–1631). The library's collection is rich in classical manuscripts, notably Homer and Vergil, in incunabula, and in Oriental texts. It also contains Leonardo da Vinci's profusely illustrated Codex Atlanticus, now exhibited for the first time at Pinacoteca Ambrosiana and at the monunmental Sacristy by Bramante in Santa Maria delle Grazie. « less

I have seen quite many picture galleries but this one surprised me. All the canvases and sculptures are very well staged and lighted, so it is a very atractive exposition. You will find the pieces in the rooms and also outside in the courtyard. The library itself not overwhelming, I found a czech translation of Danteś Comedy (who on Earth... More

This is a great little museum and library filled with works by Italian masters. In additions to numerous famous paintings, the library (beautiful in itself) displays several of Da Vinci's drawings and notes - it was fascinating to see these documents close up. It is very well worth an hour or so of your time. More

Place is packed with masterpieces including one Leonardo's painting and pages of his works with drawings and comments. If only the stuff could speak some English everything would be way more pleasant. They should allow use of the elevators. Great atmosphere in the Library!!! More

Although an easy walk from the Duoma, this is not well sign-posted and can be difficult to find. However, it is worth the effort of persevering. The Pinecoteca (Art Gallery) houses works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Botticelli, Titian, Bruegel and Raphael. Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit is there and beside it is a video panning across the canvas, showing the... More

The Pinacoteca/Biblioteca Ambrosiana can be a little difficult to find if you're not using a map, but it's so worth going. The art and the building are beautiful and being able to see so many original Da Vinci drawings up close is amazing. Definitely worth the trip! More

Although this Gallery is not one of the top attractions listed for Milan , it turned out to be a real hidden treasure . Despite Brera is the first gallery that comes to mind in Milan , reviewing the Ambroisina's vast collection with numerous Titians , a splendid Caravaggio , Da Vinci's incredible Codex Atlanticus created a lovely expreince for... If you've only time to see one gallery in Milan, it has to be La Pinacoteca Ambrosiana and its Biblioteca; a wonderful collection of paintings, including Leonardo's Musician, in a fascinating palazzo where the new lighting system allows you to see details of the paintings which you simply can't see in the state museums. The visit ends in the library... More

This gallery has some remarkable paintings, including da Vinci's "The musician" (on loan when I visited) and Caravaggio's "Basket of Fruit". The impressive library, one of the first public libraries, houses Leonardo's Codice Atlantico drawings, some of which were on display when I was there. More

and an amazing collection of other works in an amazing space. The Pinacoteca was set up in 1618 by Archbishop Federico Borromeo to form and nurture an aesthetic taste, originally with about 250 paintings, now over 1500 in number with works by Raphael, Luini, Titian, Caravaggio, Botticelli and Bruegel. Interesting computer magnification and detail of the works of Leonard and... More
