But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work. « less

This was our first visit to St Marks Square. We were fortunate that the hotel we were staying at ,was in walking distance of the Square and so we could visit at none busy times. Between the hours of ten and three the crowds are claustrophobic and if you try and take a picture be prepared to take it more... More

Lots to admire in the architecture. Nice buzz with all the multi-racial visitors. Good little snack bar at the canal-side entrance to St. Marks. Could do with some benches around the square as you are not permitted to rest on the steps. More

This is a beautiful square, but it's ridiculously crowded and really over-priced. But to just sit and soak it all in is quite the experience. There's a good amount of sights to see in the Square, including Doge's Palace, which is another must see, and a few other museums and such. It should probably be your first stop in Venice... More

One of the best parts of our time was sitting in St. Mark's Square, at an outdoor restaurant, sipping a glass of wine and listening to a classical trio playing Italian music. We choose the restrauant to have a drink at based upon what the quartet or trio was playing. More

all of humanity is in that Square, so if you want to get to see the wonders and I do mean wonders get there early. The Bascillica opens at 9.45, but the queue to get in starts a lot earlier.Got there at 9 am and joined an already growing line so waited only 45 minutes. Then went straight over to... More

This is my 2nd time in Venice and I still enjoy checking out St. Mark's Square. St. Mark's Square is the central place to check out in Venice during the day and at night. However, keep in mind that because it is such a popular place, it is a total tourist trap. You will be charged per head if you... More

Go very early in the morning to really get the feel of this "world's drawing room". At around 7:00 a.m. you will be almost alone with the waiters setting up tables, the pigeons and the light shining on this remarkable piazza. Rain is good, too, for a quieter time here. It's unfortunate that as soon as the boats from the... More

In my view a big disappointment-very crowded and not that interesting to be frank. If with elderly people who understandably get tired it will be a trial as there are very few places to rest or sit down - without eating / drinking and if you try and just sit on some steps they have polite and efficient police telling you... It is a must do, just for the experience. Crowds are massive till the evening and lots of people trying to get your money. It is all just part of the show, but worth it. More

I actually felt disappointed when I visited St Mark's Square, honestly I felt there was something missing. We didn't visit the shops as that is not what our vacation was about but we met people who told us of the 'expense' of visiting these restaurants, coffee shops etc... in the square, another tourist trap:( Would not recommend this visit, sorry.
