First visit the secret chambers. This is an hour with a guide but ours was excellent. You go through the little wooden offices hidden away upstairs where the bureaucrats kept the whole thing ruthlessly efficient,. The room with the rope got information from people strung up and lowered with their arms pinned behind their backs. Words like STASI pass through... more

We did this tour on a hot day in August. The guide was terrible and kind of sadistic. She told us it was about 120 degrees in some of the rooms at the top of the palace, but that the day before it was 140 and three people passed out and had to be evacuated! Bad tour -- amazing place! more

There is so much to see here. It's definitely a shouldn't-miss site. We did it on our own, rather than taking a tour. The history and art are fascinating, though after a few hours, you may experience mental overload. My daughter,14, used the audio tour, and she say it helped her keep everything in perspective. more

This was the only thing we did in Venice besides just walking around and seeing the city. And we loved it. I highly suggest the audio guide which lasts about 3 hours. It was great and leads you all through the palace describing all the history in great detail. We really, really enjoyed Doge's Palace and would recommend you add... more

Went into the Secret Itineraries Tour without having a clue about what we were doing or seeing...and I left with a great understanding of the history of Venice and entertained by the interesting intertwined stories. The tour guide was funny (and at times a little too theatrical, but who cares) and passionate about the history of Doge Palace. Not gonna... more

This tour really gives the visitor a sense of how the palace functioned - the tiers of authority, the terror and intrigue in times of peace as well as war. Of course you also get to see where Casanova was imprisoned and from where he escaped which was actually very interesting! We got such a lot out of this tour... more

July 2009 - very worthwhile, informative tour. We had been cautioned that it might be too hot - a simple solution is to buy an inexpensive paper fan from one of the souvenir vendors outside in the plaza more

Lots of showy rooms filled with paintings, then there are the rooms full of weapons, and the prisons, but my favourite bit had to be the Bridge of Sighs. The edges of the walls were covered with a huge blue advert, but it was still nice to be there! Also impressive was a really big room full of paintings! more

The palazzo is beautiful; the secret itinaries tour is a rather boring walk through the attic and some small areas. They are of course of great historical importance; but the story told is rather boring and the rest of the palace is much more beautiful. You can visit these areas freely after the tour; but you will notice that most... more
