Its Santa Maria Assunta church houses impressive mosaics, its bell tower offers great surrounding views—and it’s home to Locanda Cipriani, a well-regarded restaurant and hotel that played host to writing legend Ernest Hemingway . « less

Torcello was like no other place in Venice. So much greener than most of Venice and the other islands nearby. As you step off the boat you wander alongside the canal surrounded by open fields and trees. Further along there were vineyards with poppies and other wild flowers growing between the vines. On a lovely day (which it was when... More

Wonderful old basilica and church set on what was once the most populated island in the lagoon. After many of its canals silted up Malaria decimated the population and the people left the island taking the stones from their palazzas to build new homes on Venice. Now a beautiful haven for wildlife and a tonic from the bustle of Venice. More

Try to aim your trip around lunch time so you can enjoy on of the restaurants on the island, although one is very popular so you would need a reservation and a large wallet (see michelin guide). Beautiful island to walk around. Take a few euros with you to see inside the church. The whole experience makes up for the... More

For an excellent break, take a day and visit Burano and Torcello - you won't be disappointed. Visiting these islands as we did with fine weather was a refreshing break in Venice, similar but different than wandering the back streets of the city. The mosaics in the church in Torcello really are worth the visit - they literally make you... More

This place is one of the most historical establishments in the City of Venice with a history much longer what we see as "Venice" today. Essentially there's not much to see. Yet, the ancient church and the island itself are worth paying a visit. It has an atmosphere completely different from the usual Venice. Just buy a ticket for the... More

Torcello is in the northern part of the Lagoon and you must first travel to Burano to catch the Vaparetto going to Torcello. Once at Torcello you follow the canal around to the Church of Santa Fosca, a tiny little church, a larger cathedral Santa Maria Assunta, still small in comparison to others in Venice, and a small museum. There... More

This island is so peaceful. Not as many tourists on this island, at least in November, and it holds a lot of history. More

Away from the manic bustle of Venice, this almost uninhabited island was once the commercial heart of the principality and has the most amazing 7th Century Cathedral with fabulous Byzantine mosaics. The easiest way of seeing it is on a 3-island tour (Murano, Burano and Torcello) and it is best to set off as early in the day as you... More

Not a must do if strapped for time. It had nothing that I found unusual or worth a special trip. More
